About Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (Hactl)

Hactl, one the world's leading air cargo terminal operators, is a key player in Hong Kong's (HK) thriving air cargo sector (HK has been the world's busiest air-cargo hub since 2010).

Hactl's SuperTerminal 1 base at Chek Lap Kok airport is the world's single largest multi-level air cargo terminal with the capacity to handle 3.5 million tonnes of cargo annually - Hactl today, is the trusted ground handling partner for more than 100 airlines and 1,000 freight forwarders.

More than 2,400 multi-skilled and experienced professionals run Hactl's key daily operations including the award-winning COSAC-Plus air cargo management system and a comprehensive suite of cargo handling facilities and services.

At the centre of operations is the Cargo Handling System (CHS) that manages 3,500 Container Storage System (CSS) positions, 10,000 Box Storage System (BSS) positions, and specialised handling facilities supporting all cargo types from temperature-controlled products, to valuable goods, to livestock.

As CHS is a fully automated warehouse, engineers work around the clock to monitor equipment and machinery to try to optimise performance and output and make quick repairs when needed.

THE CHALLENGE

Hactl wants to enhance their predictive maintenance expertise - i.e. the ability to better track, identify and fix potential machinery issues to improve CHS efficiencies and cost savings and reduce maintenance periods.

How? Hactl wants to make better use of daily data - including cargo tonnage throughput, movement of CHS equipment, and faults reported - to develop a tracking solution that enables the engineers to better troubleshoot and fix CHS operational issues before they escalate.

Outcome - The new solution will mine data to deliver more in-depth information and analytics regarding the correlation of tonnage throughput, equipment movement, and faults. In short, the new solution aims to significantly enhance the understanding and forecasting of fault patterns to enable engineering teams to be deployed more efficiently and sustainably.

Benchmarks to improve - Engineering manpower deployment efficiency, CHS availability, and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR).

Current Issues

Forecasted tonnage is the current benchmark used to plan and deploy resources and manpower to oversee CHS breakdown maintenance (fault handling)

This metric alone makes it difficult to optimise workforce deployment in terms of maintaining the availability and MTTR of CHS equipment

More information and data must be analysed - especially the correlation of the tonnage, equipment movement and faults – to build big a bigger picture and a customised solution

Why does it matter?

The performance (availability/MTTR) of CHS affects the timeliness of cargo delivery to customers and aircraft.

An optimal number of engineers can also be deployed to ensure the smooth maintenance of systems and satisfying customer needs.
